Learning materials in PNU
ITL and Manila Science High School both using instructional materials because
21 century is students central. In the Philippines, teachers not only teach
their students various lessons in different subjects, they also serve as the
students’ second set of parents. They worry if their student is absent for a
prolonged period of time. They give food to students who went to school with
not even a glass of water for breakfast. The short of it is that the
Philippines is lucky for having teachers that go beyond the call of duty. Each
teacher must have an innovative that not only relies on IT but also visual aids
as a preventive measure if there is no electricity. In addition, teachers must
be innovative in providing material by using several learning methodologies and using several activities (learning station).
For example, using game box in which there are several games; snake ladder,
ludo, maze runner, and others.
learning station 1: game box
learning station 2- science art (mind map making)
learning station 3 - new lesson concept
learning station 4: labyrinth and guide question
learning station 5: video presentation
I started observing
teacher in the first week were in PNU-ITL (Philippine Normal University –
Institute Teaching and Learning) and the second week were in MASCI (Manila
Science High School). I found some different and identical teaching strategies
of teacher in Philippine. Prior I went to Philippine I don’t even know how to
handle the class and scared because I thought Philippine and Indonesia have a
lot of difference. But day by day I have a lot of experiences and knowledge how
to become a good teacher. Firstly, in Philippine elementary started at grade 1
to grade 6 and then high school started at grade 7 to grade 10 and senior high
school for grade 11 and grade 12.
First week in PNU-ITL i
observes in Ma’am Festin’s were teaching Science in high school section 7 to 8
am in grade 7 and 12.30 to 1.30 pm at grade 6 because PNU-ITL is under
government and I went there in January so its fourth quarter and applying
integrated science, so the lesson is science earth. Here I attached the proposed
sequence of domain/ strands per Quarter:
Grade 7

|
Quarter
|
Lesson/ subject
|
First
|
Chemistry
|
Second

Third

what can I summarize
from the observation are:
- Students in Philippine must be attended the class before 7 am and finished their classes around 5 pm. Noon break at 12 am to 1 pm.
- One lesson in Philippine only one hour, which mean if the first lesson is chemistry so they will study chemistry for one hours.
- If you are a learner, then your course is example chemistry and you have 4 classes in a day, it called section.
- First section means your first hour in chemistry at grade 10- faraday
- Second section means your second hour in chemistry 10-copernicus, etc.
- Student have required classes and elective classes.
- Students only given guide questions to find out what lesson will be taught on due day. As students are the central, all implementation must involve students.

Manila Science High School (Masci)
The Manila Science High School (MSHS or MaSci
for brevity) is the pilot science high school of the country. Patterned after
the Bronx Science High School in New York, USA, MSHS was founded in 1963 with
the graduation of the first Special Science Class spearheaded by Principal
Augusto Alzona, regarded as the "Father of Manila Science High
School."
Through the years, the school has produced
graduates that have gone on to become leaders, influencers, decision makers and
role models in their respective fields.
The tradition of excellence that has become
synonymous to Manila Science High School continues to this day.

A Brief History of Manila Science High School
§
The Manila Science High
School is presently located at the corner of Taft Avenue-P. Faura Streets It
was previously located at the corner of Victoria-Muralla Streets in Intramuros,
Manila.
§
The Manila Science High
School, then the Special Science Classes, was formerly under the Manila High
School. Mr. Augusto Alzona, principal of Manila High School, is largely
credited with the establishment of the MSHS, thus his appelation “Father of
Manila Science High School.”
§
Mr. Alzona worked hand
in hand with the Bureau of Public Schools to set up a training ground for the
future scientists of the Philippines.
§
A memorandum dated
October 12, 1959 issued by Superintendent of City Schools Abdon Javier provided
that a science high school be established in accordance with a BPS memorandum
dated September 29, 1959.
§
On October 24, 1959,
upon recommendation of their respective principals and with the written
permission of their parents, seven gifted freshmen from each high school took a
series of tests at the Manila High School.
§
The 36 students who
passed the examinations formed the nucleus of the Manila Science High School.
The first science class opened on the 25th of November 1959.
§
During its second year,
the first batch became officially known as the Special Science Class. This
class made a first in the history of Philippine education when all of its
members became gold medalist during their graduation in 1963.
§
That same year, the
Special Science Classes, by virtue of Municipal Resolution No. 426 approved by
the Mayor on October 1, 1963, was formally separated from Manila High and
called the Manila Science High School, the first science high school in Manila
and in the Philippines.
§
The organization and
curriculum of the MSHS patterned after that of New York’s Bronx Science High
School puts more emphasis on the sciences and mathematics.
§
Because the MSHS aims
to turn out “scientists with souls,” the humanities and other electives are
included in the curriculum.
§
Its not “all work and
no play” for the young Einstein and Pythagorases, they take time out from tight
schedules to participate in various extracurricular activities.
§
The school has a
well-organized student organ.
§
Small though it may be,
the MSHS has acquired some measure of fame made possible by its alumni and the
present crop of students.
§
The Manila Science High
School poses a challenge for greatness, advancement, and prosperity to the
Filipino youth.

Organizational Stucture (OS)
Only brave person will success.
A wise man said there’s always a story behind
everything. How a picture got on a wall.
How a scar got on your face. Sometimes the stories are simple, and
sometimes they are hard and heartbreaking. But behind all your stories is
always your mother’s story, because hers is where you begin.
So, this is my story.
I was wore maroon jacket, grey slack, and maroon veil then look at the
mirror “oh! what perfect match today ita”, I motivated myself. But someone
knock my door, when I open up the door, front desk assistant said that there is
someone wait for me in front of the desk. So I take my bag on the bed and run
downstairs with my sneaker and find prof. Erve has been waiting for me and want
to give me a breakfast. He chosen me fish and rice and said, “they are accquintance
of mine. Let me introduce them, teacher ita” while his eyes look at the five
students behind us. Oh! They are student ambassador in PNU ITL, I knew it
because they wore a cordon. There are three girls and 2 boys, here I attached
the pictures of the student’s ambassador from PNU ITL.
They asked me a lot, and I’m so happy because you know I feel like I’m
an actress you know. We had a good conversation, they teach me how to pronounce
number with tagalog, also ask me what’s my favorite food, hobbies and we drown
into a funny conversation. Prof. Erve is so funny teacher! He always made a joke
everywhere and I feel so bless because filipinos that I met was kind, polite, and
cherished, also funny.
After had a breakfast, then I across the street by the overpass
accompanied with them. I’ve been shown the canteen (seems like street vendor),
the office of ILO, ITL, the field, the classes, and many more. So I give a lot
of thanks because they accompany me and I never get feeling alone.
The next activity is welcoming this program, Sea Teacher Batch 7th.
The director gave me a greeting and there is one moment that I will remember in
my whole life, when she talks in front of the stage and she asked us to fill
the sentence “only the brave people who ….” Then She asked the audiences and
also me then I answer “make a history” and if we complete the sentences would
like “only the brave people who make a history”. I narrow my eyes a bit at
this, it was so deep. Oh yeah! I met Dr. Festin as a science teacher on high
school.
Another experience for today is I should have to submit my personal data
based online and offline with Mr. Renz. The funniest moment with him is when he
complains about the way he walk. He felt so tired and sigh a lot. Actually I
know what you feel Mr. Renz because we have a same problem hihi.
I met Louise and Grace to accompanied me for the afternoon break. They invited
me to go to SM (Mall in Manila nearly PNU). I’m so excited there, because I’m
not feeling strange, and everything around me were similar such as Etude house,
Tony moly Shop, the Body Shop (for the make up stuff) Payless, Chattime, KFC,
McD, etc.
I don’t believe that in one day, my whole life has taken a revolution.
I wish I could be a better person.
I wish I could be a good teacher someday.
And I wish the best for you all.
Thank you a lot for treat me better.
Prologue
A
new chance comes, maybe for me this is precious rare chance. I was chosen as
SEA-Teacher (Pre-Service Student Teacher Exchange in Southeast Asia) Batch 7th
Participant. It It was program that held by SEAMEO (Southeast Asian Minister of
Education Organization). This projects aims are to provide opportunity for
pre-service student teachers from universities in Southeast Asia to have
teaching experiences (practicum) in schools in other countries in Southeast
Asia (to know more about this program you can visit SEA MEO ).
so Hi reader! My name is Ita Adri Supriati (First, middle, last name) you can call me Ita, or IAS (re: Aiyes). I come from Indonesia especially i live in Cilegon, its a city in Province Banten. Now im study in University of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa (UNTIRTA), Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, my major is Chemistry Education so basically i will teach chemistry.
It
is an honor for me as a representative from University of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa (UNTIRTA)
Indonesia. I placed in Philippine
Normal University (PNU), Philippine There is only me who came from Banten, but there are 3 others also from Indonesia in different university.
I
feel grateful because it will become my first experience going abroad. It will
become my first
experience in teaching practicum. It’s so special because I will have teaching practicum abroad,
in Philippine. In everyday I try to upload some experiences with a
specific tittle. Maybe it will look like a dairy that someday I will open up
again and throwing back for those moments. I will spent my day with cheerful
and keeping up my spirit because I will spread you a happiness.
So,
here is my story along this journey. Hope you enjoy my story.
